A brewpub on a corner nobody could make work
Rod Hancock and Matt Jones, two rock climbers, opened Moose's Tooth in 1996, when brewpubs were booming. The spot had a reputation: one business after another had failed there. Moose's Tooth didn't. It grew into one of Anchorage's busiest restaurants, and the team went on to open the Bear Tooth Theatrepub and Broken Tooth Brewing, which makes the house beer.
All three take their names from mountains in the Ruth Gorge area of Denali National Park: the Moose's Tooth, the Bear Tooth and the Broken Tooth.
What to order
People come for stone-baked pizza with inventive toppings, served in a busy, colorful room hung with psychedelic art. The pie Moose's Tooth is known for is the Apricot: apricot sauce, chicken, carrots and cream cheese. It sounds unlikely. Order it anyway, with a pint of the house beer.
